The IHSSCA in conjunction with the Iowa Soccer Association is pleased to announce its keynote presenter for February 24-25 Symposium to be held in Ames, Iowa at Sports Iowa facility.  Former Penn State University Men’s Head Coach, Barry Gorman, will be presenting at the Symposium on both Friday and Saturday.  Coach Gorman is a 3-time NSCAA Region Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year who took Penn State to three Big 10 Championships with 13 NCAA appearances.  A former NSCAA President and professional player overseas, Coach Gorman is in the Pennsylvania High School Coaches’ Hall of Fame.  Other highlights in his coaching career include stints at Lock Haven University, Davis & Elkins, and FC Dallas of Major League Soccer as its Technical Director.    

A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Coach Gorman holds degrees from Lock Haven and West Chester University in Health and Physical Education.  He holds Irish FA ‘A’ license, US Soccer ‘A’ license, and UEFA ‘A’ license; his overall record at Penn State was 266-158-42.

The IAHSSCA in conjunction with the Iowa Soccer Association is pleased to announce its initial slate of presenters for Feb. 24-25 Symposium to be held in Ames, Iowa at Sports Iowa facility. A keynote presenter will be announced Jan. 26. We are excited about the special guest we have joining us and look forward to sharing more details with you soon! In addition to the presenters listed below, we are preparing breakout sessions on rules, officiating, All-Star Game, State Tournament qualification process, and sports performance with representatives from various organizations, such as Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletics Union. There will be classroom and field sessions in addition to the Fri evening Annual General Meeting. In the meantime, we have the following presenters confirmed doing field and/or classroom sessions:

  • Lang Wedemeyer: For 17 years, ‘A’ licensed Wedemeyer has been at the helm of overachieving Jackrabbits building the program from scratch and defeating BCS teams such as then #14 Colorado in the NCAA Tournament. Overseeing the transition from Division II to Division I, Coach Wedemeyer – an Academic All-American as a player, has built SDSU into a regional power. Coach Wedemyer has been active in the NSCAA, and at the club and ODP level for many years.
  • Sean Holmes: For over 15 years, Sean Holmes led Drake University to dizzying heights reaching the Elite 8 against such powerhouse programs as Boston College and Ohio State. Frequently ranked nationally, Drake under Coach Holmes’ leadership oftentimes fielded home grown talent from Iowa. ‘A’ licensed, Coach Holmes has vast experience in the classroom as well as the field at many levels. Sean is the current head boy’s coach at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines.
    Gareth Smith: current Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Drake University and Director of Coaching Education at Iowa Soccer Association, Gareth is frequently involved at the regional and national level with US Soccer and ODP from a coaching education and boys’ youth programming. A native of Scotland, Gareth has been a director of two different Iowa soccer clubs, including West Des Moines Soccer Club.
  • Josh McAllister: a sports science and fitness coach who has worked with Portland Timbers, Sporting Kansas City, Drake University, and West Des Moines Soccer Club, Josh brings a wealth of experience in the soccer and sports performance fields.
  • John Pascarella: new head coach of the Des Moines Menace, Coach Pascerella had previously served under Head Coach Peter Vermes at Sporting Kansas City since 2009. A former professional goalkeeper, Coach Pascerella will be presenting at the symposium for the first time.
  • Corbin Stone: former Head Women’s Coach at Drake University, the ‘A’ licensed coach has been active in club soccer for over 20 years, serving as a club director in several different organizations. Currently, Pleasant Valley High School boy’s coach, Coach Stone was an assistant coach at Iowa and Augustana in Rock Island, Illinois before becoming a three-time Coach of the Year at Drake and leading them to four consecutive unprecedented conference championships in the Missouri Valley.
  • Tony England: NSCAA Master Coach and consultant, Tony is author of several publications and books. He is a club director in Minnesota with St. Croix, and is a goalkeeper by training.
